Linear Integration

Connect Qualflare to Linear to file Linear issues for new defects, failed launches, failure clusters and flaky tests, with a team, labels and priority.

Last updated

The Qualflare Linear integration files a Linear issue in the team you choose when a defect is created, a launch fails, a failure cluster is found or a test turns flaky; a workspace Editor installs it once, and each project picks a team.

Issues are created by the Qualflare app, not by your Linear account, and nothing you do in Linear changes Qualflare.

What the integration does

The Linear card is under Testing on the workspace Integrations page. Each project picks which of these events file an issue: Defect Created, Launch Failed, Cluster Created and Flaky Test Detected. Qualflare only creates issues: it never updates, closes or comments on them.

Before you begin

  • You install Linear on the workspace Integrations page Editor+ · workspace (requires the Editor role or higher in the workspace).
  • You set up each project on its own Integrations page Editor+ · project (requires the Editor role or higher in the project).
  • In Linear, you approve the Qualflare app for your Linear workspace, which takes a Linear workspace admin.

Install Linear

  1. In the workspace sidebar, open Integrations, then the Testing tab
  2. On the Linear card, click Install
  3. On Linear, approve the Qualflare app. It asks to read your workspace and to create issues
  4. You are sent back to Integrations, with the Linear card installed
Linear asks you to approve the Qualflare app for your workspace; issues are then created by the app.

Configure a project

  1. In the project sidebar, open Integrations and click Configure on Linear (Edit once it is set up)
  2. Pick the Linear team, shown as KEY — Name: "The Linear team where issues will be created."
  3. Optionally pick Labels from that team's labels. They are "Applied to every issue. The defect's environment is also added when a label with the same name exists."
  4. Under Events, select which events create a Linear issue
  5. Click Save
Each project files issues in one Linear team, with the labels you pick.

Check deliveries

Each issue Qualflare tries to file is a row in the project's Recent deliveries, with Linear's error in Detail when it fails. A flaky test with both events selected files two issues, one for Flaky Test Detected and one for its Defect Created.

What the issue contains

The issue title depends on the event, for example [Defect #12] <defect name> (Issues). The body is the same as on GitHub and ends with Created automatically by Qualflare.

For Defect Created, the issue's priority comes from the defect's severity. Other events file issues with no priority.

Defect severityLinear priority
Critical1, Urgent
High2, High
Medium3, Medium
Low4, Low

Your Labels are added to every issue, except labels that no longer exist in the team. For Defect Created, Qualflare also adds the team label whose name matches the defect's environment, ignoring case, and the new issue's ID, such as ENG-123, shows on the defect under Linked issues.

A Defect Created issue carries the defect's details, a priority from its severity and your labels.

Reconnect and remove

Qualflare refreshes its Linear access token on its own. If Linear refuses the refresh, for example after the app was removed in Linear, Qualflare turns the integration off and the card shows Reconnect. The card has no Install button while Linear is installed, so remove Linear and install it again. The card says your project settings are kept, but removing Linear deletes them: note each project's team, labels and events first.

Removing Linear deletes every project's Linear settings. To use Linear again, install it and set up each project from scratch.

On the Linear card in Workspace → Integrations, click the trash icon, then Remove. Qualflare also revokes its access token at Linear.

Data sent to Linear

Qualflare sends the Linear team, labels and priority above, and the issue title and body: a defect's number, name, severity, environment, category, status, team, root causes, description and expected and actual results; a launch's number, status, branch and failed and total counts; a cluster's name, pattern and case count; or a test case's name, suite and flaky rate.

Troubleshooting

  • The Linear team list is empty. The list shows only the teams the Qualflare app can access in Linear; a Linear workspace admin can give it access to more teams in Linear.
  • A label is missing from issues. It was deleted in Linear, so Qualflare skips it.
  • No issue appears. Open Recent deliveries: Detail has Linear's error.
  • The card shows Reconnect. See Reconnect and remove.
