Test Plans

A test plan in Qualflare is a saved selection of test cases you run by hand in the Test Wizard. Create a plan, pick its cases, run it and check its limits.

Last updated

In Qualflare, a test plan is a saved selection of test cases that you run by hand in the Test Wizard, such as a release check or a regression pass; a Starter workspace can have up to 10 test plans.

How test plans work

A test plan picks which of your cases you run together. Suites organize the cases, and a plan has:

  • Name and Description
  • Test Cases: the cases you pick, one at a time or a whole suite at once
  • Dynamic Queries: saved queries from the Explore page that you attach to the plan. They don't add cases to the plan's runs; see Attach saved queries

A test plan has no schedule, trigger, assignees, environment, milestone or status. You choose the environment and language each time you run it.

Plans vs suites

Test plans and suites are complementary but different:

  • Suites are where your test cases live (organization)
  • Plans are which cases you run together (selection)

The cases of one suite can be part of several test plans. For example, cases from an "Authentication" suite can be in a "Smoke" plan and in a "Full regression" plan. See Test suites.

Use cases

  • Release regression: Pick the cases to check before each release, then start a run from the plan for every release candidate.
  • Smoke set: Pick the few critical cases that must pass on every build, and run the plan after each deployment.
  • One-off manual run: Use Start Launch on the Launches page. It builds the plan for you from the suites you choose.

The Test Plans list

The Test Plans list shows every test plan in the project.

NameThe plan's number and name, for example #12 Release 2.4 regression. Click it to open the plan

Date CreatedWhen the plan was created
Date UpdatedWhen the plan was last changed

Click the Name or Description header to sort by it. Date Created and Date Updated don't sort the list. The number (#12) identifies the plan within the project.

Bulk actions

Select plans with their checkboxes to see the bulk actions. Delete removes the selected plans after you confirm. Archive is shown but isn't available: it only shows "Archive coming soon".

Delete in a row's ⋯ menu deletes the plan at once, with no confirmation and no undo. The detail view's Delete and the bulk Delete ask first. Deleting a plan doesn't delete the launches you ran from it.

Start a manual run of a plan with the play icon on its row.

Create a test plan

Editor+ · project (requires the Editor role or higher in the project)
  1. Go to Test Plans and click Create Test Plan.
  2. Enter a Name and a Description.
  3. Click Create.
FieldRequiredLimitDescription
NameYes3 to 128 charactersThe plan's name
DescriptionYes3 to 512 charactersWhat the plan is for

The form lets you type more (200 characters for the name, 10,000 for the description), but a plan with a longer name or description than the limits above fails to save.

A new plan has no cases. Add them on its Test Cases tab.

A test plan needs a Name and a Description.

The plan detail view

The plan detail view opens when you click a plan's name. Its header shows:

ElementDescription
Number and nameFor example #12 Release 2.4 regression
CreatedHow long ago the plan was created
DescriptionShown under the name
⋯ (More options)Edit and Delete

The detail view has no run button. Start a run with Create Run in the list. Below the header are the Test Cases and Dynamic Queries tabs.

Pick the cases

Pick the cases the plan runs on its Test Cases tab.

  • The left panel lists the project's suites. Tick a suite to add all of its cases, or click a suite to see its cases.
  • The right panel lists the cases of the suite you clicked. Tick the cases you want.
  • Click Save Cases. Your changes are saved only when you click it.

The tab label shows how many cases the plan has, once it has any.

Tick suites or single cases, then click Save Cases.

Attach saved queries

Attach saved queries from the Explore page on the plan's Dynamic Queries tab. Tick the queries you want and click Save Queries. If the project has no saved queries yet, the tab shows No saved queries. Create one on Explore first; the filters it saves are listed in Search and filters.

Dynamic Queries don't add cases to a plan. When Qualflare loads a plan's cases, for example in the Test Wizard, it skips the queries saved on the Explore page. A run of the plan includes only the cases on its Test Cases tab, so pick every case you want to run there.

Saved queries attach on the Dynamic Queries tab, but they add no cases to runs.

Run a test plan

You run a test plan by hand, in the Test Wizard, and each run is a launch. There are two ways to start: Create Run on the plan's row, or Start Launch on the Launches page, which creates a plan for you.

Create Run

Access: Test Plans list → play icon (Create Run) on the plan's row

Behavior:

  • Opens the Test Wizard with the plan's cases
  • Shows Environment and Language at the top, with one of each preselected. Change them before you record the first result: they lock after that
  • Creates the launch when you record the first result

See Running Tests with the Test Wizard and Environments.

Start Launch creates a plan

Access: Launches → Start Launch

Behavior:

  1. Choose one or more suites and click Next
  2. Set Environment, Language and Platform, and optionally Branch, Milestone and Name, then click Start
  3. Qualflare starts the launch, creates a test plan with every case in the chosen suites, and opens the Test Wizard. The plan takes the Name you entered. Without one, it is called something like Launch – 2026-10-23 14:05

These plans appear in the Test Plans list like any other. See Start a manual launch.

Automated runs

Test plans don't run on a schedule or on a trigger. Results you upload from CI with qf <identifier> collect create launches that aren't linked to any test plan. See collect and CI/CD Integration. To review a run, see Analyze launch results.

Edit a test plan

Open the plan and choose Edit in the ⋯ (More options) menu. The Edit Test Plan form has Name (required, 3 to 128 characters) and Description (optional here, up to 512 characters). Click Save.

Edit changes the name and description. To change the cases, use the Test Cases tab. The Dynamic Queries tab attaches saved queries, which don't add cases.

Delete a test plan

Deleting a plan permanently removes it and its case and query selection. There is no undo, and Delete in a row's ⋯ menu doesn't ask you to confirm.

Owner · project (requires the Owner role in the project)

Access: Plan detail view → ⋯ → Delete, a row's ⋯ menu, or the bulk Delete

Behavior:

  • Permanently deletes the plan and its case and query selection
  • Keeps the launches you ran from the plan
  • The detail view asks you to confirm: "Are you sure you want to delete this test plan? This action cannot be undone." The row menu deletes without asking
